देव्युवाच

Goddess said (to Brahma)


अहो सुमहदाश्चर्यं वेदवक्ताऽपि विश्वकृत् |
महाज्ञानपरो भूत्वा विधाता किं वदत्ययम् || 33 ||


What a great surprise! Even the speaker of the Vedas, the creator of the universe, having become a great knower, what is this that the creator (Brahma) is speaking?

Mahagnyanapara is a pun. It could be maha-gnyanapara (above the great knowledge) or maha-agnyanapara (above the great ignorance). Asking for the supreme God to have moha is the height of *********.

ब्रह्मोवाच

Brahma said (to the supreme Goddess)

तस्मात्त्वमेव रूपेण भवस्व हरमोहिनी |
सुता भूत्वा च दक्षस्य रुद्रपत्नि शिवे भव || 24 ||


Therefore you only with a (good looking) form become the cause of moha (illusion/confusion) to Hara (Shiva). And Shivaa (Uma), become the wife of Rudra (Shiva) after becoming the daughter of Daksha.

Three forms of Uma, the supreme Goddess

उमाया अपि रूपाणि भविष्यन्ति त्रिधा सुतौ || 56 ||
लक्ष्मीर्नाम हरेः पत्नी ब्रह्मपत्नी सरस्वती |
पूर्णरूपा सती नाम रुद्रपत्नी भविष्यति || 57 ||

Uma will also have three forms – Lakshmi as the wife of Hari, Brahma's wife Saraswati, and the complete form with the name Sati will be the wife of Rudra.

Shiva and Shivaa should be known well as responsive to devotees, of the form of the supreme element, who have voluntarily become with form.

विष्णुरुवाच |


Lord Vishnu said (to Lord Brahma)


शिवः सर्वस्वकर्ता हि भर्ता हर्ता परात्परः |
परब्रह्म परेशश्च निर्गुणो नित्य एव च || 35 ||


Shiva is really the creator of everything, maintainer and destroyer, above the highest, the supreme element, the highest God, as well as without form and eternal.

Listen, Narada, with affection the character of Lord Shiva, which simply by listening, a man becomes free of defects (of desire, anger, greed, etc.).

उपायं स चकाराति तत्र मारागणोऽपि च |
मोहो भवन्न वै शंभोरपि कश्चित्परात्मनः || 57 ||


He (Madhu) very much tried a remedy there and also the Maraganas. Moha (illusion/confusion) did not occur at all to the supreme soul Shambhu.

कामप्रभावमारगणोत्पत्तिवर्णनं नाम नवमोऽध्याय

काम उवाच |


Kamadeva said (to Lord Brahma) gloomily


ब्रह्मन् शम्भुर्मोहनियो न वै योगपरायण |

न शक्तिर्मम नान्यस्य तस्य शंभोर्हि मोहने || 7 ||

समित्रेण मया ब्रह्मन्नुपाया विविधाः कृताः |

रत्या सहाखिलास्ते च निष्फला अभवञ्छिवे || 8 ||


Brahma, Yoga perfected Shiva cannot be caused moha (confusion/illusion). Neither my strength nor anyone else's can cause moha to Shiva. Brahma, with my friend, I tried various means. And all the efforts with Rati failed on Shiva.

Vasishtha said (to Sandhya)


मन्त्रेणानेन देवेशं शंभुं भज शुभानने |

तेन ते सकलावाप्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः || 62 ||

ॐ नमः शङ्करायेति ओमित्यन्तेन संततं |


With this mantra "Om namah Shankaraya Om" continuously worship Shambhu, the God of the Devas with (your) auspicious mouth. With that you will no doubt get everything.

The curse on Kamadeva

 

ब्रह्मोवाच |


Brahma said (to Kamadeva)


आत्मजा मम संध्येयं यस्मादेतत्स कामतः |
लक्ष्यीकृतोऽहं भवता ततः शापो मया कृतः || 73 ||


Since you targetted me to have lust for my this daughter Sandhya, I cursed you.


त्वं भस्म भूत्वा मदन भर्गलोचनवह्निना |
तथैवाशु समं पश्चाच्छरीरं प्रापयिष्यसि || 75 ||


After you become ash from the fire of the radiant eye (of Shiva), soon you will get a body.

The five arrows

ब्रह्मोवाच |
 
Brahma said (to Narada)
 
हर्षणं रोचनाख्यं च मोहनं शोषणं तथा |
मारणं चेति प्रोक्तानि मुनेर्मोहकराण्यापि || 12 ||
 
(These arrows) will be called by the names Harshana, Rochana, Mohana, Shoshana and Marana which will cause moha (illusion/confusion) even to sages.

कामशापानुग्रहो नाम तृतीयोऽध्याय

ऋषय उचुः |


Sages said (to Kamadeva)


यस्मात्प्रमथसे तत्त्वं जातोऽस्माकं यथा विधेः |

तस्मान्मन्मथनामा त्वं लोके ख्यातो भविष्यसि || 4 ||


Since you, born of the element of our Lord Brahma, will harass (all living beings), you will become known by the name Manmatha.


The next two lines say why he will also be called Kama and Kandarpa.

Kamadeva to control everyone

 

अहं वा वासुदेवो वा स्थाणुर्वा पुरुषोत्तम |

भविष्यामस्तव वशे किमन्ये प्राणधारकाः || 39 ||


Wonderful man, I or Vasudeva (Lord Vishnu) or Lord Shiva, we will come under your control, what to say about other living beings.


This is only what Brahma is saying to Kamadeva. It does not mean that will happen.

Brahma said (to the man who appeared)


अनेन त्वं स्वरूपेण पुष्पबाणैश्च पञ्चभिः |

मोहयन् पुरुषान्स्त्रीश्च कुरु सृष्टिं सनातनीं || 37 ||


With this form, with five flower-arrows, you cause moha (illusion, confusion) in men and women and make the eternal creation.


The man will be called Manmatha, Kandarpa, Kama(deva).

Yama does not want to see people with Tripundra, rudraksha or vibhuti

 

रुद्रसंहितायां सृष्टिखंडे गुणनिधिसद्गतिवर्णनं नाम अष्टादशोऽध्याय

धर्मराज उवाच |


Yama said (to his assistants)


ये त्रिपुण्ड्रधरा लोके विभूत्या सितया गणाः |

ते सर्वे परिहर्तव्या नानेतव्या कदाचन || 44 ||


Assistants, those people in the (mortal) world whitened by vibhuti (holy ash) with a tripundra should be left alone and never brought here (to Yamapur).


The next few lines say that those having sprinkled vibhuti on them, dressed like Lord Shiva, or having a rudraksha on them while having tied the hair, also should be left alone and not brought here.

As long as one has sins left while in the (human) body, no achievements come. And once the sins are gone, he succeeds in everything.

एवं वै यो विजानाति तस्य मुक्तिर्न दुर्लभा || 31 ||


Lord, he who becomes your devotee really becomes more favourite to me. His liberation is not difficult, who knows this.

The one who does destruction, maintenance and creation (of the universe) is me, with form or without form, the parabrahma (supreme element) free of defects with the characteristic of sachchidananda.

गर्वापहर्ता स स्वामी शङ्करः परमेश्वरः || 30 ||

परं ब्रह्म परात्मा स सच्चिदानन्दबोधनः |

निर्गुणो निर्विकारी च रजःसत्त्वतमःपरः || 31 ||


That Lord who takes away pride is the Supreme God Shankara. He is the supreme element, the higher soul who gives sachchidananda, without form, without defects and is above the (characteristics of nature) rajas, sattva and tamas.

Suta Goswami said (to the sages)


सदाशिवकथाप्रश्नः पुरुषान्स्त्रिन्पुनाति हि |

वक्तारं प्रुच्छकं श्रोतॄञ्जाह्नवीसलिलं यथा || 22 ||


Like the water of river Ganga, a question about the stories of Shiva really purifies, makes holier men and women, the person who replies, the person who asks as well as the listeners.


Rudraksha a must

रुद्रभक्तो विशेषेण रुद्राक्षान्धारयेत्सदा || 62 ||
A devotee of Shiva in particular should always wear (keep on him) a Rudraksha seed.

तत्राश्रुबिन्दवो जाता वृक्षा रुद्राक्षसंज्ञकाः || 7 ||

From the folds of (my) nice eyes drops of water fell. The trees that were born out of (grew from) the tear drops there are defined/named as Rudraksha (Shiva eye).

अंगुष्ठेन कृता रेखा त्रिपुंड्राख्याभिधीयते || 86 ||

Lines drawn with the middle finger, ring finger and in the middle, the thumb in the opposite order, are called the Tripundra.

Suta Goswami said

सर्वतीर्थेषु यत्पुण्यं सर्वतीर्थेषु यत्फलम् |
तत्फलं समवाप्नोति भस्मस्नानकरो नरः || 77 ||

All the punya (merit) there is in all tirthas (places of pilgrimage), all the fruits one can get in all tirthas, that fruit a man obtains who bathes in ash.
