Suta Goswami said (to the sages)

 

अवन्ती नगरी रम्या मुक्तिदा सर्वदेहिनाम् ||

शिवप्रिया महापुण्या वर्तते लोकपावनी || 5 ||

 

The pleasing city of Avanti (Avantika, Ujjayini, Ujjain) is capable of giving liberation to all living beings. Favourite of Lord Shiva, with high merits, it exists, sacred to the world.
